Elliott urges peaceful resolution of all parading disputes

Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott has urged the peaceful resolution of all parading dispues.

Mr Elliott was speaking forllowing the news that Parades Commission have asked former Stormont Speaker Lord Alderdice to lead a new initiative aimed at resolving padrade disputes in the Ardoyne area of North Belfast.

Mr Elliott said

"Whilst any initiative aimed at reducing tensions is to be welcomed, questions will be asked if this latest initiative is an admission that violence pays.

Violent protest against peaceful parades in Ardoyne is being rewarded with initiatives, whereas years of peaceful protest by the Portadown District Orange Lodge has been ignored by the powers that be and it would appear that the Residents Group's refusal to engage in talks with the Orange Order has been rewarded for its intransigence. .

This is not a healthy situation. A peaceful resolution is required to all parading issues, including the Garvaghy Road."
