Elliott concerned at Prison escape in Republic

Ulster Unionist Justice Spokesman Tom Elliott has expressed his concern at a Prison escape in the Republic which saw one of the men apprehended in Enniskillen.

The Fermanagh & South Tyrone MLA said:

“Whilst I obviously welcome the co-operation between the PSNI and the Garda which resulted in an escaped prisoner being apprehended in Enniskillen, I am keen to find out how that individual escaped in the first place.

The fact that the individual in question was part of a group of three who escaped from a Prison in County Cavan is the cause of some concern.

Under the current Justice Minister, we in Northern Ireland have become accustomed to prisoners being mistakenly released early, but it would now appear that the Republic’s Justice Minister has questions to answer, particularly just how “open” is an Open Prison
