Overend hits out at anti-Police protestors who forced cancellation of GAA road safety initiative

Ulster Unionist MLA Sandra Overend has hit out at those who forced the cancellation of a Road Safety event at Derrytresk GAA club in her Mid-Ulster constituency because the event would have involved representatives from the PSNI.

Mrs Overend said:

“It is absolutely shameful that anyone would seek to prevent young people learning about road safety, but that is exactly what has happened at Derrytresk GAA club in my Mid-Ulster constituency.

I understand that the “Live to play” initiative was set up by the GAA’S Ulster Council following the death of a number of young players on the roads and that the Derrytresk club was willing to participate in the scheme. Until a number of individuals threatened to picket the event because of the involvement of the PSNI.

There is something seriously wrong with the mindset of people who would object to a road safety event aimed at educating young people to the importance of taking care on the roads.

That they would rather risk young people being injured or killed on our roads before they would permit them to engage with the Police, says far more about them than anything I possibly could.”
