Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott has raised concerns following information that Tesco staff in Northern Ireland are not permitted to wear a Queen’s Jubilee badge which the Company’s staff in the remainder of the United Kingdom are allowed to wear.
Mr Elliott said:
‘It is very worrying that a UK based company would seek to discriminate against its own staff who live and work in Northern Ireland.
I understand that Tesco staff in Limavady were mistakenly issued with the badges but were later instructed to remove them.
If this is indeed the case it is a major PR blunder by the firm and an insult to all those people who wish to celebrate the Jubilee.
I am therefore calling on Tesco Management to clarify if staff working in stores in Northern Ireland have been banned from wearing name badges commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and if so, to explain their actions and why staff in Northern Ireland are being discriminated against.”
