Nesbitt calls for ruling on whether Conor Murphy broke Ministerial Code

Ulster Unionist Party leader, Mike Nesbitt MLA has called fora ruling on whether Conor Murphy MLA has broken the MLA Code of Conduct and alsobreached the Ministerial Code following the conclusions of an employment tribunalinto the appointment of Sean Hogan as Chair of NI Water.

 Mr Nesbitt said:

“First and foremost, Conor Murphy must apologise to AlanLennon.  It is clear that he has beensubjected to discrimination on the grounds of his religion.  It is shameful that someone should be passedover for a job simply because of their religious background.’

“In light of the judgement made by the tribunal, I believeit is necessary for Mr Hogan to stand down from his position as Chair of NIWater to allow a fair, transparent process to run.  He of course should be free to re-apply forthe position, but it is vital that the Chair of NI Water is appointed on merit.’

“I am in no doubt whatsoever that a ruling is needed overwhether Conor Murphy’s sectarian decision broke the MLAs Code of Conduct, whichcalls for equality and objectivity, and also breached the Ministerial Code, which demands impartiality, integrity and objectivity.’

“It is vital that these steps are taken to restore public confidencein Ministerial appointments.’
