Ulster Unionists express shock and sadness at death of Northern Ireland football legend Alan McDonald

Ulster Unionist sports spokesman Robin Swann MLA expressed his shock and sadness at the death of former Northern Ireland captain Alan McDonald at the age of 48.

North Antrim MLA Mr Swann, who represents the Party on the Stormont Culture, Arts & Leisure Committee, said:

"People were shocked yesterday to learn of the sudden death of former international captain Alan McDonald.

Alan played 52 times for Northern Ireland and achieved legendary status in the eyes of Northern Ireland fans for his comments on the pitch at Wembley in November 1985, on the night he played his part in the team's qualification for the Mexico World Cup at which he played in all three Northern Ireland matches.

He was a very popular figure and his death at such a young age is a tragedy. Our thoughts are with his family and his many friends and colleagues both throughout the game and in the wider community."
