McGimpsey demands Executive action to prevent recurrence of flooding in South and East Belfast

Ulster Unionist South Belfast MLA Michael McGimpsey has repeated his demands that the Executive finds the required money to fund the major infrastructure investment needed to tackle the problem of flooding in south and east Belfast once and for all.

Speaking in the Assembly Mr McGimpsey said:

“Last week the people of south and east Belfast once again saw their homes and businesses devastated by serious flooding.

As a South Belfast representative I know only too well the fears of many people when they see or hear a weather forecast that involves heavy rain.

The facts are very straightforward. Belfast sewerage and storm water systems are not fit for purpose. Much of it was built in the 1930s and due to the amount of development which has taken place since then, it is now hopelessly out of date.

It is essential that the Executive match their words with actions and find the money necessary to ensure that the citizens of Belfast can have confidence that their homes will not be put at risk every time we experience a period of heavy rain.”
