Boxing clubs must receive their fair share of investment – McGimpsey

Ulster Unionist DCAL Committee member, Michael McGimpsey MLA has called for boxing clubs in Northern Ireland to be given their fair share of any investment into sports.

Michael said:

“Northern Ireland has a very proud history and tradition of boxing and many of the world’s finest boxers have come from here.  SadlyI don’t believe that boxing is receiving the support that it merits.’

“Boxing has a very valuable contribution to make in Northern Ireland, especially in some of our most socially disadvantaged areas. Given that many of the young people, especially males, taking part are from areas where there are high rates of suicide, depression and self-harm, it is important that the role of boxing clubs in giving them a focus and helping with the developmentof their confidence and character is recognised.’

“A problem that a lot of boxing clubs are facing is that their facilities aren’t up to standard.  This is an area where I believe Councils could step up to the mark and provide some support for the clubs.’

“At a recent presentation to the Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee by representatives of DCAL and Sport NI we were told all about the investment being made into local sport, but weren’t provided with a timelines as to when the local sporting community would start to see the benefits of such investment.’

“Many of our local boxing clubs are run by two or three people who are giving up their spare time to carry out a role that has immeasurable benefits for the community.  We need to make sure they are not being overlooked and are receiving adequate support.’
